ROUND ONE: CONTESTANTS’ CHOICE SONG

TATE STEVENS
First song: Bonfire by Craig Morgan
Judges’ comments: Britney Spears does not think this was Tate’s best performance and that the performances should be better at this point of the competition. Demi Lovato disagrees and says it was freaking amazing and a winning performance. Simon Cowell says Tate was being authentic and sang the type of song that he wants to record and it was important to do that. Simon thinks Tate can will it all and this was one of his favorite performances. “You look like a man who believes he can win.” LA Reid thought this was the most fun he’s had on the show so far watching Tate perform.

CARLY ROSE SONENCLAR
First song: ‘Your Song’ by Elton John
Judges’ comments:LA said this was a risky song choice but Carly Rose did things with the song that he’d never heard done before. He things she did great. Demi, after explaining that from now on she is being honest in her opinions because she has no “game” left in the competition, called Carly’s slow song choice“predictable” yet she still said it was her favorite of Carly’s performances because it showcased the R&B side of her voice. Demi – predictable is you not having any artists left in the competition. Simon said it “was a beautiful version of a fantastic song”. He also liked that her intro video showed an emotional side of her. He said this was not her best performance and that she could do better and he thought she was nervous. He said Carly is lucky she has a second song to sing tonight. Britney said Carly Rose has “blossomed into a huge superstar already.”

EMBLEM3
First song: “Baby I Love Your Way” by Peter Frampton
Judges’ comments: LA said after wondering all season when the boys would have their five-million-dollar moment, he thought this performance was it. Britney said there was something “really special” about the performance. She added that it’s “unfair” to call Emblem3 a boy band because they’re way more than that. Demi loved them because they sang and moved and thought it was the first time since their first audition that their performance felt true to who they are. Simon agreed with Demi for a change and said their performance was reminiscent of their first audition. He said if that performance doesn’t get them into the finals, nothing will.

FIFTH HARMONY
First song:”Anything Can Happen” by Ellie Goulding
Judges’ comments:LA said it was the very best vocal performance they’ve ever done. He found it to be a “really inventive vocal” but didn’t care for the production. Britney loved everything about it and said they inspired girl power. Demi thought everything about it was cute and said it felt really great. She said they pulled out the sparkle that they sometimes need. Simon said that even though they came in last place last week and they need a miracle as underdogs to make it into the finals, anything can happen after a performance like that.

ROUND TWO: MENTORS’ CHOICE SONG

TATE STEVENS
Second song: Fall by Clay Water
Judges’ comments:Britney said Tate has had his share of hits and misses on the show, and that performance was a direct hit. Demi said Tate is a good guy and did an amazing job. Simon predicted Tate will never have to go back to his old job. He also said Tate is as likely to get voted off as Simon is likely to fly to the moon, meaning Tate will definitely get into the final. LA praised his consistent performances and said he did great as usual.

CARLY ROSE SONENCLAR
Second song: Imagine by John Lennon
Judges’ comments: LA said Carly picked another difficult song and found yet another way to make the song her own. Demi thought it was fabulous and said the only predictable thing about that performance was that it was gonna be amazing. Simon thought the song ended up sounding “fussy” because too many different things went on during the performance, and it ended up not having a consistent vibe. Britney felt she was ready to go beyond this stage and compete with the biggest stars in the world.

EMBLEM3
Second song: Hey Jude by The Beatles
Judges’ comments: LA thought he’d hate this performance but ended up thinking they did a great job. He said Emblem 3 are teen heartthrobs like The Beatles were. Britney told the boys to take a bow because it was an A-level performance. Demi didn’t think they are yet at The Beatles’ level, but does think that they are filled with huge potential. Simon said they “nailed” both of their performances tonight.

FIFTH HARMONY
Second song: Impossible by Shontelle
Judges’ comments: LA said it was a lazy song choice because they had sang this song before and thought they could have brought something better to the stage. He does not think the performance was good enough. Britney said it was a good performance but a bit stiff. She would be surprised if they made it to the finals. Demi expressed concern for their fate as well. Simon defended his song choice, saying that the performance reminded him of why people loved the girls in the first place and why he fell in love with them.
