Pepsi wants to boost its brand dazzle, so, of course it’s going to revert back to its golden days when Michael Jackson was promoting the soft drink.

Pepsi announced that it has struck an exclusive deal with the late King of Pop’s estate, allowing it to use the music legend’s image for its new global marketing push. The campaign will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the late performer’s multi-platinum Bad album and tour.Wall Street Journal reports that the nature of the promotion will vary by country, but will include a TV ad, special-edition Pepsi cans featuring MJ’s image and chances to download remixes of his biggest hits. Also a part of the campaign will be merchandise such as jackets inspired by the original Bad tour and chances to win tickets to performances of Cirque du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour.”

One billion special-edition Pepsi cans featuring Jackson’s image will be sold around the world. China will get the first batch starting this Saturday. Special-edition 16-ounce cans will be available later in the month in the U.S., followed by rollouts in Asia, South America and Europe.

You may recall that Jackson first partnered with Pepsi in 1983. In an ill-fated 1984 accident, Jackson’s hair caught fire while filming a commercial for the brand, an unfortunate event which some believe led to the start of Jackson’s addiction to prescription drugs, and ultimately to the downfall of our greatest artist.
