Hope Solo is an international soccer star. She’s won an Olympic gold medal. She’s wooing Dancing with the Stars‘ fans and judges’ alike as Maksim Chmerkovskiy‘s dream dance partner. Yet Hope is not a sexy woman. At least not if you ask her.

“I still don’t buy the idea that I’m a sex symbol,” the 30-year-old soccer star tells ESPN magazine in its  annual Body Issue in which she is pictured nude.

“Sure, I’ve had marriage proposals, invitations to military balls and prom offers. But my entire purpose is trying to be the best, and if that exudes beauty too … it means the image of the typical female body type is finally evolving.”

But she has not always felt happy about her physique. “Growing up, I felt insecure about my build,” says the 5’9″, 150 pound soccer star. “Guys would say, ‘Look at those muscles! You can kick my ass!’ I didn’t feel feminine.”

“But that’s changed in the last four years.”

The Body Issue also features other athletes, including Apolo Ohno, Alicia Sacramone and Gretchen Bleiler.
