The apes are surprisingly running wild at the box office. Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the primate prequel starring James Francoand featuring an impressive motion-capture performance by Andy Serkis, opened in first place with ticket sales totaling $54 million.

In second place, The Smurfs, brought in another $21.0 million in its second week but that is a 41 percent drop from last week’s surprise smash opening.
Cowboys & Aliens came in third with an estimated $15.7 million, down 57 percent from last week.

Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman did not enjoy a good weekend as their switcharoo comedy, The Change-Up, brought in a lackluster $13.5 million at the box office, landing the flick in fourth place.
