Hit Songs Of 2013 – The ‘Now’ Songs:
Amber Holcomb
Song: “Just Give Me A Reason” by Pink & Nate Ruess
Judges’ comments: Nicki does not feel connected to Amber after her performance as much as she did in her background video. While her voice was good, Nicki did not feel a connection between her and the song. Randy says at this stage, contestants usually lose their sense of fun. He did not feel her spirit like he does usually. Mariah applauds Amber for learning a new song so well but wants to see more confidence in her. Keith is a big fan of Pink and thinks Amber did a good job considering the circumstances. He loves the clarity in her voice.

Angie Miller
Song: “Diamonds” by Rihanna
Judges’ comments: Keith appreciates that Angie has put her own spin on the song which he’s always liked for its “percussive melody” –but he does not think this was the best song to change.  He wanted her “let her spirit go”. Nicki says it was different than her previous performances –she was not as connected and this was “bland and lacklustre” –Nicki thinks it’s because Angie was trying too hard to perform. Randy said it was an interesting choice and agrees with Keith that she should not have changed the arrangement. Mariah said she expected her to change it and she tried to take the song to another place but she did not like that she tried to play to the audience.

Kree Harrison
Song: “Stormy Weather” by Ethel Waters/Gladys Knight
Judges’ comments: Mariah was interested by the song choice because it’s a song that is played a lot and is “loungey. She said it did not allow her to be bluesy. Keith said to never lose what comes naturally to her. Nicki said the song choice matters a lot and she wishes she had focused on that. Randy felt the disconnect to the song and said she may have chosen the Etta version versus the Lena version. He said she still did a good job.
