MTV Cancels Buckwild. Show’s Producer Slams Network

MTV, the network that glorifies pregnant teenagers and drunk Guidos, has taken the high road and canceled Buckwild after one of its stars died–accidentally. And the hypocrisy of this act was not lost on the show’s producer, J.P. Williams.

Buckwild featured a group of young, wild partying West Virginians. One of its stars, Shain Gandee, 21, died April 1 in a car crash while mudding (off-road driving), along with his uncle David Gandee, 28, and friend Donald Robert Myers, 27.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Williams said, “This is the network that has shows about teen pregnancy,” referring to hit shows 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom. “They’ll stick by a show that allows you to abandon a child, but a kid dies by accident – doing what he does for a living – and they cancel the show?!”

How does Williams feel about that? “There’s something that smells of s–t here on every level,” he explains.

Williams manages most of Buckwild’s cast as well as producing the show. He was told by MTV on Friday that the show would go on. But on Tuesday, MTV sang a different tune and canceled the series. “There was no explanation,” Williams says.

Now, get this. Williams will continue to shoot the teens, hoping their show lands a home on some other network. Or on the big screen. “My job is to protect these kids,” Williams alleges, “this will get ugly.”
