In reaction and swift response to the tragic and devastating elementary school massacre which took place Friday in Newtown, Connecticut,  a U.S. Senator promises to propose a bill to ban assault weapons on the first day of Congress’ new session in 2013.

Amen.

This announcement by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) came on the heels of President Obama’s Newtown speech Sunday night at the multi-faith vigil, promising strong action to prevent further tragedies.

Feinstein said on NBC’s Meet The Press, “I’m going to introduce [the bill] in the Senate, and the same bill will be introduced in the House – a bill to ban assault weapons.

“Who needs these military-style assault weapons? Who needs an ammunition feeding device capable of holding 100 rounds?” Feinstein asked.

“These weapons are not for hunting deer – they’re for hunting people.”

The proposed bill “will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession, not retroactively, but prospectively.”

The purpose of the bill which also proposes to ban the sale of clips of more than ten bullets is to “to get weapons of war off the streets.”
