Breakout stars like Broadway’s Robin de Jesús, international actress Leni Rico and TV star Emilio Rivera have all stepped out and shared their secrets with the public, showing aspiring actors that true success comes from an attitude more than formula. Gain industry insight and perfect your A-game with their insider tips.

Teach | Be Taught

Actors teaching between gigs isn’t uncommon in New York. Actor Robin de Jesús, a triple threat on Broadway and twice nominated Tony Award nominee went beyond boarders, teaching acting, dancing and singing to his hometown Norwalk at workshops. Both teaching and workshops taught by industry professionals are great steps for actors, whether your a professional in-between jobs or an amateur just starting out—learning is never a bad thing. Taking an acting boot camp or enrolling in acting school are great places to start. Find a program that embodies all aspects of performance; that emphasizes song, dancing, acting, connect with a character, convey emotion and prepare for an audition are great ways to up your competitive edge. Likewise, those with experience can share their expertise with students.

Surround Yourself With Support

Spanish Actress Leni Rico started acting in street performances organized by the neighborhood kids on her block. Although she didn’t find her true passion for acting until later in life, she always had a strong support system backing up whatever dreams she chose to follow. In an interview with the Examiner she said: “Be focused on whatever you want to achieve in life and choose friends that bring out the best in you. Anything is possible with determination and trusting and believing in yourself. Don’t be distracted from your goals and of course take action!” When pursuing dreams it’s good to take a step back and analyze your relationship and weed out anyone who may be bringing you down.

Turn Negative Comments Into Positive Ones | Never Stop Dreaming

Star of “Sons of Anarchy” actor Emilio Rivera gave this advice at a Youth Summit for 1,200 Fontana Unified School District Media and Entertainment students. He explained that most people give up on their dreams when it seems like life changes make you do so. But, when it comes to dreaming, you’ve got to stick to it. No matter what others think or how hard it may get, always find a way to make it work. Extraordinary dreams take beyond ordinary effort. Rivera continues to explain that education is important and to do what you do in life for you and you only. There will always be set backs and bad things that happen, the trick is being able to turn everything into something positive that helps you grow, learn and better yourself as a person.
