It’s been four years since Jennifer Hudson‘s mother, brother and nephew were murdered by William Balfour and Hudson is now able to show grace and forgiveness for the man responsible.

During an interview with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday, Hudson revealed that she does not blame Balfour for the killings and said, “For the most part, it’s not his fault. It’s what he was taught, how he was brought up.”

Hudson went on to explain that Balfour “never had a chance” because he had a difficult upbringing. She even had a heartfelt message for the convicted killer:

“Had you had the love my mother gave us, or the background that, you know, some have, then you would’ve stood a chance.”

Hudson has yet to visit her family’s burial places but hopes to gain the courage to do so one day, especially now that Balfour has been convicted of the crimes and serving a life sentence in prison. “I want to go because I feel like, Okay, we’ve accomplished this, we’ve done this, we got justice for you,” she said. “I can’t come back here empty-handed. So I came back with justice being served. So now I feel like I deserve to be able to see them.”
