Struggling soap opera actor Nick Santino committed suicide last week one day after he euthanized his dog.

According to New York PostSantino was under extreme pressure from his Upper West Side condo in New York to remove the dog from the premises.

So, on his own 47th birthday, the actor euthanized his pet Rocco. But it appears that the guilt ate away at his conscious. He left behind a suicide note, “Today I betrayed my best friend and put down my best friend. Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn’t deserve this.”

The actor had appeared on All My Children and Guiding Light. He was raised in an orphanage and bounced around between foster homes.  He had rescued his pit bull from a shelter a few years ago and had written on his Facebook page, “I did not rescue Rocco, Rocco rescued me.”

So why kill his beloved dog? In 2010, his condo association revised its owner regulation policies, one of which banned pit bulls. Though the new policy did not apply to current owners’ pit bulls, Santino’s neighbors say he began to be harassed about his pet.

“He felt like he was in this battle because he was the only guy in the building with a pit-bull mix,” Santino’s neighbor, Kevin Clearly, told the New York Post. “He was distraught and remorseful about putting down his best friend.”

After making a call to his former girlfriend at about 2 a.m. Wednesday, police found Santino’s body in his bedroom – He had passed away from an apparent overdose on pills.

  1. Why do people have to be so mean and heartless. People need to get a life and stop harrassing other people. I hope there are alot of people in that condo that can’t look themselves in the mirrow and can’t sleep at night knowing what they did to a man and his best friend.
