On this Thursday’s (August 29, 2013) Big Brother eviction episode, Aaryn Gries was voted off of Big Brother and finally confronted by Julie Chen about the racial and homophobic remarks Aaryn made while in the BB house. And the exit interview was every bit as uncomfortable and awkward for Aaryn as we all had hoped for.
Chen started the interview by telling Aaryn that some of her early remarks in the show sounded homophobic and racist. Aaryn tried to brush off the accusation by blaming it all on being southern.
“Being Southern, it is a stereotype and I have said some things that have been taken completely out of context and wrong. I do not mean to ever come off racist. That is not me and I apologize to anyone I have offended for that,” Aaryn said. Mind you, her prepared speech was accompanied by bouts of laughter and boos from the audience who did not buy into her innocent act.
Chen begged to differ and hit Aaryn with specifics, quoting Aaryn as having said: “Be careful what you say in the dark, you might not be able to see the b*tch,” referring to Candice, an African-American contestant. Aaryn looked shocked. Chen continued, “Shut up, and go make some rice,” referring to Helen, an Asian contestant. Aaryn looked in denial of those words. Chen ended with, “Nobody is going to vote for whoever that queer puts up,” referring to Andy, a gay contestant. Aaryn looked defeated.
Then, Aaryn tried to blame my state, Texas for all her words. “I honestly feel horrible. I feel like in Texas we say things that are sometimes… we joke and we don’t mean it.” The audience laughed yet again. And again when she said she’s friends with Candace and loves Helen.
