American Idol Season 12 has yet to premiere, but we’ve already had more drama off season than we’ve ever had in a single season combined. And all of it stems from the judges and not the young, hopeful contestants.

With just a week to go until Idol hits our TV tubes again, Mariah Carey was featured last night on ABC’s Nightline. The singer opened up to Barbara Walters, and confirmed the  feud between herself and fellow judge Nicki Minaj.

“It felt like an unsafe work environment,” Carey described of the rumor that Minaj had said “shoot that bitch.” And by bitch, Minaj reportedly meant Carey.

“Anytime anybody’s reeling threats at somebody, it’s not appropriate. I’m a professional. I’m not used to that type of environment.” Mariah then said, “Sitting there on the road with [my nearly 2-year-old twins], I’m not going to take any chances.

“So yeah, I did hire more security.”

Thankfully, things have mellowed down between the two divas. Well, that is until they all go to the live rounds sometime in February.

“For all the drama, I hope it helps the show,” Carey said. “I think it’s a classic, classy show and it didn’t need this.

“For me, ultimately, this is about the kids, the contestants. I’ve been blessed to live my dream more than half my life, so I want help give that back to someone else.”

American Idol Season 12 auditions rounds premieres over two nights next week, beginning on January 16. Who’s excited? Who’s just plain over it?
