DWTS 11-19 recap

Dancing with the Stars airs its semi-finals performance episode tonight November 19, 2012 from 8 to 10PM EST. Tonight, the remaining five couples will each perform two dances. If you missed any of last week’s special Veteran’s Day performances, click here for a full show recap of and performance videos from DWTS.

The first routine tonight for each couple is an unlearned dance and the second routine is a dance chosen by another couple during last week’s episode. For the unlearned dance, teams will be performing a number set to the music from Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ album.

NEWS UPDATE: We have another injury on the set. Tony Dovolani who has been coming in first place time after time this season hurt his back during rehearsals and may not be able to dance tonight. Henry Byalikov is on standby to dance as Melissa Rycroft’s partner if Tony is not able to dance tonight.

-8:02 PM — Dance Troupe performs to a medley of Michael Jackson hits.

ROUND ONE:

MELISSA RYCROFT AND TONY DOVOLANI
Dance: Caveman Hustle – Melissa says this dance has not been done on the show before and she’s not sure how they’re going to put the dance together. Tony injured his back during rehearsals and Melissa was not sure he’d make it. But of course, the doctors cleared Tony just in time, and he danced! The dance started with a digital dinosaur and Melissa and Tony were dressed as sexy cavemen.
Song: Walk The Dinosaur by Was Not Was
Judges’ Comments: Len: “Melissa you never disappoint. You captured the flavor of caveman..” to which Tony asked, “Does that come up often in dance?” Bruno: “That is the most effective use of animal skin since Raquel Welch. So much whiplash. You lost your footing a little bit…You cant shake side to side.” Carrie Ann: “I loved it and it was the most perfect way to bring two random dances together.” She did agree that she lost her footing but loved the entertainment aspect of it.
Scores: Carrie Ann: 9. Len: 9.5. Bruno: 9. Total so far: 27.5/30

SHAWN JOHNSON AND DEREK HOUGH
Dance: Knightrider Bangra – Indian Folk Dance
Song: Knightrider theme. Derek said he’d rather eat mustard on ice cream than do this combination of dance because they have even less in common. But of course when it came time for the performance, they were perfect yet again. At least in my eyes. Let’s see what the judges have to say.
Judges’ Comments: Bruno stood up for them and asked Shawn for a hug. “I loved that! Mega hit! and This time they’ve done in Bangra Style.” Carrie Ann: “What do you say to that? Fantastic!” Len: “This dynamite was fantastic!”
Scores: Carrie Ann: 10. Len: 10. Bruno: 10. Total so far: 30/30

APOLO ANTON OHNO AND KARINA SMIRNOFF
Dance: Big Top Jazz. During rehearsals, Apolo jokes that Karina is breaking body parts which he did not even know he had. Apolo says no matter how hard he works, this dance is not sticking in his mind.
Song: What You Waiting For by Gwen Stefani
Judges’ comments: Carrie Anne loved the concept but felt it was very disjointed and they were very out of sync and had sloppy dismounts. Len said there were a couple of awkward moments but thinks Apolo is a fighter, so well done. Bruno called it edgy and Surreal and a mix of Clockward Orange and Cirque du Soleil. He said it was one of the most creative dances and but for a slip, it would have been a 10.
Scores: Carrie Ann: 8.5. Len: 9 . Bruno: 9.5 . Total so far: 27/30

EMMITT SMITH AND CHERYL BURKE
Dance: Espionage Lindy Hop. Cheryl says Lindy Hop is very cartoonish and out of Emmitt’s comfort zone.
Song: Theme to Secret Agent Man
Judges’ comments: Len: Liked the energy and the lifts and said the whole package was fantastic. Bruno said it was a loony tune version of James Bond. Said it was Emmitt’s mst fun performance ever. Carrie Anne said it was a very animated Emmitt.
Scores: Carrie Ann: 9. Len: 9. Bruno: 9. Total so far: 27/30

KELLY MONACO AND VAL CHMERKOVSKIY
Dance: Surfer Flamenco. During rehearsals, Val said timing is everything with this dance and the choreography is very challenging because there is no holding back at this point in the competition. “Sink or Swim” is what Val calls it. During the performance, Val strips down to his Speedos. Bruno must be happy.
Judges’ comments: Bruno: “Kelly, you have been upstaged by the Speedos!” He said it had all the aggression and fire of Flamenco but not the placement–had too much Paso. “It was erratic!” Carrie Ann agreed that it was all Paso and the Flamenco was non-existence. Len said if this dance was poker, Kelly went all in. He loved the attack and energy.
Scores: Carrie Ann: 8. Len: 9. Bruno: 8.5. Total so far: 25.5/30 so far which is the lowest score of the night so far. Val said the score was unfair and that Kelly was being politically correct when she said the scores did not bother her.

ROUND TWO:

MELISSA RYCROFT AND TONY DOVOLANI
Dance: Argentine Tango
Song: Dirty Diana by Michael Jackson
Judges’ Comments: Len said he would be very disappointed if Melissa does not make it to the finals. Bruno: You dirty wicked nasty woman! You were possessed out there. Those lifts were fantastic. You really excel all expectations. You deserve to be in the finals. Carrie Ann: Dirty Diana meet Magnificent Melissa. I can’t believe you’re the underdog. It was passionate and the lifts were out of this world.
Scores: Carrie Ann: 10. Len: 10. Bruno: 10 for 30/30 for a Total tonight of 57.5/60

SHAWN JOHNSON AND DEREK HOUGH
Dance: Argentine Tango. Derek said a double elimination has been thrown at them at the most critical junction in the competition. Shawn says she’s hidden it all season how much winning again means to her, but it really means everything.
Judges’ Comments: Bruno: We’ve seen two Argentine Tangos and two different interpretations. It was breathtaking –it was stylistically perfect. Carrie Anne: The movements were absolutely amazing and every line was perfect. But said they lacked intimacy. It was still beautiful but lacked drama, passion and intimacy. Len broke up the fight between Bruno and Carrie Anne and said Shawn and Derek sold both the rehearsal and performance. He loved it!
Scores: Carrie Ann: 9. Len: 10. Bruno: 10. for 29/30 for a Total tonight of 59/60.

APOLO ANTON OHNO AND KARINA SMIRNOFF
Dance: Rumba. Apolo said this is the hardest thing he’s ever done in his life and he’s gone through a roller coaster of lows, highs and middles this competition.
Song: Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson.
Judges’ comments: Carrie Ann:” THAT is what I am talking about. You don’t have to over dance to do well. You reached in my heart and melted it.” Len: “It was like a sea, a wave after wave of emotion. It was captivating and fabulous. Bruno: “Get down on it Apolo! You nailed it. It was perfectly pitched between sensuality and romance.”
Scores: Carrie Ann: 10. Len: 10. Bruno: 10. for a 30/30 and Total for the night of 57/60

EMMITT SMITH AND CHERYL BURKE
Dance: Emmitt said his first time on DWTS he had no idea what he signed up for. He was a gladiator on the football field and a baby on DWTS. Emmitt says this point in the season is like the playoffs push for the Super Bowl. Emmitt seems frustrated in rehearsals.
Dance: Tango
Song: Michael Jackson’s Leave Me Alone
Judges’ comments: Len said Emmitt had the biggest challenge tonight in the dances that he performed. He said Emmitt coped marvelously well. Bruno loved it but said the footwork needed more refinement. Carrie Ann said Emmitt brought his A game to both of his dances. She said they have to judge on technique and it could have been tighter but the audience loved it.
Scores: Carrie Ann: 9. Len: 9. Bruno: 9 for 27/20 and a Total tonight of 54/60 which is the lowest score tonight tied with Kelly and Val.

KELLY MONACO AND VAL CHMERKOVSKIY
Dance: Rumba. Kelly says the Rumba is the most intimate dance and she has a hard time with intimacy. Even though she’s on General Hospital and doing romantic scenes all the time, it’s easy for her on daytime because it’s telling someone else’s story. It’s hard when she’s telling her story. She also said she was embarrassed at her first DWTS win but Val has made her feel good about herself.
Song: Michael Jackson’s I Just Can’t Stop Loving You. Kelly kisses Val at the end of the dance
Judges’ comments: Bruno: That was smoldering  driven by desire and lust. You have incredible chemistry. Carrie Ann: That was beautiful and breathtaking. Len said it had control and emotion.
Scores: Carrie Ann: 9.5. Len: 9.5 . Bruno: 9.5 for 18.5/30 for a Total tonight of 54/60 which is the lowest score tonight tied with Emmitt and Val.
